Toshiaki Umezawa, The 4th Director of ISS (FY2015)
It is a great honor for me to serve as the 4th director of the research unit ISS, which was founded in 2006 and has since been developed by former directors Prof. Hiroshi Watanabe, Prof. Satoshi Konishi, and Prof. Susumu Iai. I will strive to further promote and improve the activities of the ISS to the best of my ability while welcoming your kind cooperation and encouragement. In the near future, the concept of life span, which has continued to gain importance in recent ISS research projects, in particular in the field of sustainability science, will be highly important. My own research too focuses on the sustainable production and utilization of plant biomass, especially lignins and related compounds, in the field of plant biochemistry and metabolic engineering. The ISS will further cooperate with professionals of a great number of study fields with the aim to tackle problems in today’s society including depopulation, and strive to find ways to establish a sustainable society.
